Spotting the X-Factor

As part of a Science & Art Lecture series hosted by Studium Generale Groningen, Edan has worked together with Neuroscientist Emily Cross exploring how dance can influence the study of action & perception. This led to the collaborative lecture ‘Spotting the x-factor’ that Edan gave with Emily.

Spotting the X-Factor (a Studium Generale Lecture)
A collaborative exploration between neuroscience and dance.
What is it that grabs your attention when a dancer takes the stage? Your attention seems to be drawn to some dancers more than others. Surely it depends on things like costume and makeup, the choreography, or the dancer’s technical expertise. However, other less tangible factors can also influence your perception; a seemingly indefinable quality of performance presence, created by a combination of the dancers’ personality and the dancers’ talent and skill. How do we┬árecognize this performance presence? And is it something that each member of an audience perceives in the same way? Choreographer Edan Gorlicki and neuroscientist Emily Cross collaboratively explore these questions in word and dance.
